Steve Zissou is a whacky genius oceanographer. He is creating a documentary out at sea on his decrepit research vessel Belafonte. However, his partner, chief diver, and closest friend, Esteban du Plantier, is eaten alive by a ten-meter-long jaguar shark. And Zissou spends the rest of the film attempting to exact revenge on this shark and documenting it.
The other members of his crew include his estranged wife Eleanor Zissou, who acts as his chief strategist and financial backer.
